About Me

Q&A

Q Who the heck are you?

A My name is Trevor Johnston. Among other things, I am a visual journalist, digital illustrator, infographic artist, creative problem solver, master of Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator and the answer to your illustration and graphic woes. Oh, and a happily-married, photography-obsessed father of three talented young ladies.

Q How long have you been all of those things?

A More than half my life, the photography even longer.

Q But, you’re so young!

A Not a question, but we’ll allow it because it’s a valid and worthy point.

Q Is it true you were one of the early pioneers in digital infographics? How is that possible if you’re really so young?

A Sorry, limit of one question at a time. Let’s go with the first one. My career as a digital news artist – one of the first in Canada – began in 1987, cranking out daily news graphics on a MacPlus for the London Free Press. The concept of covering news stories using infographics was relatively new and in my three years at the Free Press, I helped establish the paper as a leader in the field, not just in Canada, but in North America. My success there led to my recruitment by Southam News, Canada’s premier news agency at the time. There, I helped launch their graphics service, providing news graphics to 30 Canadian daily newspapers. My award-winning work at Southam News subsequently caught the attention of the Los Angeles Times who in turn hired me as Senior News Artist. After two years at the Times, covering major news stories like the Northridge earthquake, I returned to Canada in 1995 to strike out on my own. Flash forward almost two decades and I continue to produce compelling illustrations and infographics for some of the biggest names in publishing and for government agencies, advertising and the corporate world.

Q&A continued…

Q Really? Some of the biggest names in publishing?

A Yep. Check ‘em out, here.

Q Ever won anything besides the love and respect of your wife, countless art directors and designers?

A Well, my “trophy wall” boasts three Society of News Design awards, a National Newspaper Award and a Pulitzer Prize, awarded to the staff of Los Angeles Times for coverage of the Northridge earthquake.

Q You have a trophy wall?!?

A Nope. But I have won those awards. And the love and respect of countless art directors and designers. And my wife.

Q I’d love to work with you, but I’m not keen on visiting Canada in January. Am I out of luck?

A Au contraire, my friend. That’s why Mr. Gore invented the internet. Although my physical studio is located in Canada’s capital city of Ottawa, there are literally no borders to the reaches of my work. While the majority of my clients are North American, I work with customers from all corners of the globe at all times of the year. All your artwork is delivered digitally, served at room temperature.

Q So, what kind of work can you do for me?

A Besides, awesome, mind-blowing stuff, you mean? Read “One last question: What can I do for you?” below. There’s your answer.

Q Cool. How can we become best buds or work together?

A Just click the green button below that reads, “Hire this kid pronto!” and one will follow the other.

One last question…

What can I do for you?

Although I tend to specialize in technical illustration, diagrams and infographics, my expertise is wide-ranging. Whether it be an exploded view presentation of a home handyman building project, a how-it-works infographic of your latest product, or even signage for your country’s transportation system, it all comes down to the visual and graphic presentation of your information. If you have information begging to be explained visually, please drop me an email or give me a call and I would be happy to offer my professional advice on the best solution for the job at hand.

Here’s a quick look at some of the specific types of digital illustration expertise I can offer you:

  • Ghosted view

The inner workings and components of a piece of equipment, product, or structure are revealed by varying layer opacities.

  • Exploded view

Components are “exploded” or pulled apart to better reveal a product’s assembly and parts structure.

  • Cutaway view

The layers that make up a structure are sliced or peeled away to expose its hidden construction and composition.

  • Photo illustration

Illustration and photographs are merged to highlight specific, possibly hidden, features of a product.

  • Infographics

A wide-ranging genre covering everything from explanatory artwork to corporate marketing graphics.

  • Feature

Generally used as the main artwork for a story or article, often serving as a base for additional insets or infographics.

  • Product

Used for presenting everything from yet-to-be-manufactured product concepts to existing items.

  • Explanatory

Covers a broad spectrum of artwork including maps, charts and diagrams that explain a process or concept.

Trevor is a go-to technical illustrator for the Popular Science brand. Taking things apart and looking inside is part of our human curiosity, and Trevor makes this visualizations a reality.

Todd Detwiler, Design Director

Popular Science

Trevor is a top notch illustrator who has a unique infographic style. Easy to work with, flexible, reliable, produces and delivers sharp, clean, accurate work and always to deadline. His attention to detail is second to none. Trevor and I have a great relationship when it comes to visualizing how the illustration will work into the final layout.

Paul Crawford, Creative Director

Golf Magazine and the SIGolf Group

Trevor might be the most talented guy from Ottawa since Dr. Raymond Stantz.

Rodney Diaz, Deputy Art Director

Fine Homebuilding

I think of Trevor as a true collaborator. On complex technical illustrations, he’ll often do his own research and propose the best way to show ideas visually—and clearly. His beautiful, accurate work helps us share scientific concepts with our readers at a glance.

Katie Peek, Information Graphics Director

Popular Science

I have been assigning work to Trevor since the mid 1990s, and he is still the only designer I go to when faced with a difficult challenge. He not only has amazing creative strength, but has unsurpassed technical skills to bring his vision to life. He continues to “wow” me every time.

Larry Hasak, Creative Director and Principal

Hasak, Inc.

Trevor is an innovative and creative illustrator who moves easily between high-quality conceptual illustration and more detailed technical infographics.
