Level 4 lab
Deep inside Winnipeg’s National Microbiology Laboratory lies Canada’s only Biosafety Level 4 lab, one of just 15 on the planet. Here, under ultra-high security and sealed in airtight units, scientists study the nastiest of the world’s nasty diseases and pathogens, like Ebola, SARS and Anthrax.
While under temporary contract with the Toronto Star, Canada’s largest newspaper, I was tasked with researching, writing and illustrating a two-page infographic detailing life inside a “typical” Biosafety Level 4 laboratory. Tight security and my aversion to things like Ebola prevented me from visiting and documenting the actual Winnipeg BSL-4 facility. Using a 30/30 orthographic projection allowed illustrated elements to be duplicated, repositioned and mirrored with minimal concern for perspective or lighting.
