KH-9 spy satellite

From 1971 to 1986, the U.S. launched 20 Lockheed Corporation-built KH-9 reconnaissance (read: spy) satellites. The satellites, which were declassified in 2011, were 50 feet long, weighed more than 12 tons and carried high-resolution mapping and photographic cameras. Say cheese!

Assignment

Optics & Photonics News (OPN) is a monthly news magazine that covers recent developments in the field of optics. Creative Director Alessia Kirkland tagged me to create the cover illustration, opening art and additional infographics for a feature story on the KH-9 spy satellite. The “to-scale” cover illustration and story opener art were created using 3D software and Adobe Photoshop.
